- It is a fight for statehood. Washington DC is center stage on Capitol Hill, pushing to become the 51st state. The House Oversight and Reforms Committee is holding a hearing on the topic. Last year, the same committee passed a DC statehood bill, sending it to the House floor for the first time since 1993. Advocates say the 700,000 people living in the district deserve representation. But many in the GOP call it a political grab to add more Democratic seats. If DC becomes a state, it would become Washington Douglas Commonwealth, named after Frederick Douglas.
