Congressional heavy hitters: Jim Jordan, Val Demings to speak at Volusia GOP, Dem events

Jim Jordan, the congressman from Ohio, will be the keynote speaker at the Volusia County Republicans' Lincoln Dinner Oct. 2, the party announced Friday.

That followed an earlier announcement by Volusia Democrats that U.S. Rep. Val Demings of Orlando will headline their Mary McLeod Bethune Gala on Aug. 13.

Democrats' Bethune Gala

Demings, who's seeking the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate against Republican incumbent Marco Rubio, is a three-term congresswoman and the former Orlando police chief. In 2020, she served as one of the House managers in the impeachment of former President Donald Trump, and was later considered a contender for President Joe Biden's running mate.

Also, the Democrats will have David Pepper, former chairman of the Ohio Democratic Party and author of novels, including "The People's House," a political thriller, and "Laboratories of Autocracy," a nonfiction look at how corrupt state legislators pose the greatest dangers to American democracy.

Tickets to the Democratic gala at the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach are on sale until Aug. 1 and can be ordered at https://secure.actblue.com/donate/gala-2022.

Republicans' Lincoln Dinner

Jordan was elected to Congress in 2006 after having served in the Ohio State House and Senate. In Congress, Jordan was a founding member of the Freedom Caucus and is ranking member of the U.S. House Judiciary Committee.

Trump awarded Jordan with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2021.

Congressman Michael Waltz will also speak, while state Rep. Tom Leek will serve as master of ceremonies. GOP Chairman Paul Deering said last year's Lincoln Dinner attracted 1,200 to hear Gov. Ron DeSantis, and he's hoping for another sellout this year.
