Congressman Frost proposes national nonpartisan office for gun violence prevention

Newly elected Florida Congressman Maxwell Frost announced that he is sponsoring a national proposal to combat gun violence.
On Monday, Frost spoke outside of Orlando City Hall laying out a plan to create an office for gun violence prevention.
Frost said his proposed office of gun violence prevention strips the politics out of the debate even if people don’t like where the facts fall.

“We don’t have a singular office at the federal level that works at ending gun violence every single day,” Frost said. “And I believe that an issue that takes 100 lives a day is a daily issue and requires a daily solution and daily work.”
Frost said the nonpartisan office would coordinate with government agencies to find ways to cut down on the number of shootings.
He said it wouldn’t be a so-called office of gun restrictions, but some people may not like what the facts say.

“As long as we keep packing legislation, that increases the number of guns that we have on our streets, then we’re going to continue to see an increase in gun violence,” said 9th Circuit State Attorney Monique Worrell.
Frost said this is a first step; however, activists are already calling for more.

“I think we’ve been doing data collection for so long that let’s be the last office that does this data collection, let the next office actually implement something that’s going to make some change,” said Miles Mulrain of Let Your Voice be Heard.
The proposal also has backers in the Senate, and Frost said he has talked to Republican congressmen about making this a bipartisan bill but didn’t say if any are on board as of now.
