Days after the elections and a campaign marred with allegations of infidelity, Congressman William Timmons and his wife Sarah Timmons have decided to separate.

“It is with both love and mutual respect for one another that we have ultimately made the difficult decision to end our marriage," their statement to The Greenville News said. "We have always been and will continue to remain close friends. We wish each other happiness as we enter these next seasons of our lives separately. We respectfully ask for privacy as we navigate this process.”

In South Carolina, a couple would have to file for separation for a year before they can move on to divorce proceedings. Court records show that Sarah Timmons filed for separation Friday morning.

Timmons, who was endorsed by several GOP favorites, including former President Donald Trump, won his election comfortably in the 4th Congressional District on Nov. 8. Though a private affair, Timmons' position in Upstate South Carolina and claims reported by FITSnews, news surrounding his personal life bore a lot of scrutiny leading up to his election.

In Greenville, Timmons' personal life has been at the center of a controversy involving Greenville developer Ron Rallis. Back in Aug., Rallis painted the former Bible Way Full Gospel Missionary Baptist Church bright pink and put the word "Trap" above it.

In a community forum explaining why he painted the church pink, Rallis swerved the majority of the conversation on his frayed relationship with Timmons and law enforcement agencies. Through it all, Timmons said that he wanted privacy.

This is a breaking story. Check back for updates.
