Congresswoman resigns amid "relationship" scandal

A fresh new face in Congress is stepping down.

California representative Katie Hill is facing allegations of an inappropriate relationship with one of her staffers.

She posted a statement on Twitter on Sunday (October 27), saying the decision to quit was best for her constituents, community and the country.

She said, "For the mistakes made along the way and the people who have been hurt, I am so sorry, and I am learning."

The California Democrat is under investigation by the House ethics committee.

The probe is focused on allegations that Hill had a sexual relationship with one of her congressional staffers, claims that she denies.

Hill is going through a divorce.

In her resignation letter, she hinted she was the victim of a smear campaign and blamed her "abusive husband".

However, according to media reports, Hill has admitted to an inappropriate relationship with a campaign staffer when she was running for Congress.

Hill's victory in a district north of Los Angeles helped Democrats win control of the House.

Her departure could help Republicans win back her seat in November 2020.
