Connecticut forecast: Heat wave arrives this weekend. Here’s how hot, and when.

After a chilly Memorial Day weekend that included record-breaking cold, Connecticut is headed into a heat wave.

When are things going to heat up?

Connecticut’s first heat wave of the year is expected Sunday through Tuesday, said Gary Lessor, chief meteorologist at Western Connecticut State University’s Connecticut Weather Center.

All three days, the high temperature will be 90-95 degrees, and the low will be in the mid-to-upper 60s, he said. It will be humid, but not oppressive.

Sunday’s high temperature will be at least 40 degrees warmer than last Sunday’s, when the high only reached 50. Saturday’s high was only 49; Monday’s was 64.

In fact, the temperatures on Saturday, May 29, and Sunday, May 30, were the coldest high temperatures for those dates on record, Lessor said.

Is this early in the season for a heat wave?

Not really. In the past five years, the earliest heat wave happened in 2017, from May 17-19. The latest was in 2016, from July 15-18

But didn’t the temperature already hit 90 this year?

Yes, the temperature hit 90 at Bradley International Airport on May 22 and on May 26. But you need three consecutive days at 90 degrees or above for a heat wave.

What will the weather be like before Sunday?

There’s a threat of showers Wednesday afternoon, and the high will be near 70. This is below the normal high for June 3 of 76.

Friday will be cloudy, with more chances for showers or thunderstorms. The best chance for rain is in the afternoon, Lessor said. The temperature will creep up to the mid-70s.

On Saturday, the temperature will rise farther, into the mid-80s. It will be partly sunny. There is a chance of an isolated storm, especially earlier in the day.

The heat really kicks in on Sunday and sticks around until Wednesday. It will be mostly sunny Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, but there is a slight chance for pop-up showers each day.
