Prosecutor: Connecticut man shot woman, 19, who fought with his wife in Worcester

WORCESTER — A Worcester District Court judge held a Connecticut man without bail Tuesday afternoon after deeming him dangerous to a 19-year-old victim who the man allegedly shot in the abdomen during a party Sunday evening.

Juan Carlos Hernandez Villegas, 34, of Danielson, faces one count of armed assault to murder, among other charges, for allegedly shooting the teenager Sunday evening after she had physically fought with his wife, according to Assistant District Attorney Alexander Van Den Eynde.

Police said in an earlier report on Tuesday that the woman was treated at the scene and transported to the hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

"She said that she is afraid that he's going to come back," read Van Den Eynde during Villegas's arraignment. "She is afraid that it will happen again."

Villegas was arrested Sunday around 11 p.m. at a large party on Young Street, a small street not far from where Main and Stafford streets meet in the Main South area.

Van Den Eynde said that Villegas had a loaded gun but did not have a Massachusetts license to carry with him.

Dressed in a dark purple suit, Villegas leaned toward a Spanish interpreter, listening intently as Judge Steve Power read the numerous charges against him, among them unlawful carrying of a firearm, and carrying a loaded firearm without a license.

Villegas has pleaded not guilty. He is due to appear in court for a dangerousness hearing on Friday.
