Dan Conner (John Goodman) learnt some tragic news in the latest episode of The Conners.

In 'Brothers, Babies and Breakdowns', which aired in the US last night (February 18), Dan discovered via the obituary section in the paper that his estranged father, Ed Sr, had recently died.

Ed was played by Ned Beatty on the original show Roseanne and was last seen in season six – though his passing came as Dan's estranged half-brother, Ed Jr (Noel Fisher) returned.

Ed Jr is a late-in-life child that their father had with his second wife, Crystal, and appears as a 21-year-old college graduate in the show. However, he harbours resentment towards Dan for not helping take care of their father.

The Conners originally killed off Roseanne's title character ahead of its debut in 2018, which came after the original show was cancelled due to a racially offensive tweet by star Roseanne Barr.

Meanwhile, season two of the show has seen the return of Katey Sagal as Dan's school friend Louise, while The Big Bang Theory star Johnny Galecki has returned to the role of David for a handful of cameo appearances.

"I may be putting the (literal/figurative) pants of #davidhealy back on for one or two more stories on @theconnersabc this year," he previously wrote on Instagram.

"Twenty some years later I'm still in awe of this freakass carnie group who adopted me early on and still learn so very much from them whenever in their presence."

The Conners airs on ABC in the US.
