HOLLAND — Two new developments are moving forward on the southside of Holland.

The first, a mixed-use development that will serve as the new home of Grand King Buffet and Shanghai Grill and Bar, received its third site plan approval from the Holland Planning Commission on Tuesday, Jan. 11.

The site plan for 421 E 32nd St. was previously approved in 2019, then again in 2020 after developers lowered the number of residential units. The newest iteration of the plan outlines a phased process, with one building constructed in 2022 and another as finances allow.

The building planned for this year includes a 13,500-square-foot restaurant and banquet center, plus four apartments totaling about 5,500 square feet. In 2019, developers told the planning commission the restaurant would consolidate Grand King Buffet and Shanghai Grill and Bar, replacing existing locations at 661 E 24th St. and 442 E 32nd St.

The applicant for the project owns both restaurants. Shanghai Grill and Bar opened in 2015, featuring dine-in and carryout for lunch and dinner, including sushi.

The roughly 3-acre plot is on the corner of 32nd Street and Hastings Avenue, just a few lots away from a similar mixed-use development at the former Goog's Pub.

Phase two will include a mix of retail space and apartments in a 15,000-square-foot addition. The plan is significantly larger than the 14,000-square-foot total at 667 Hastings Ave. — where Goog's Pub will reopen in a sized-down space. That building will have nine residential apartments and a boutique grocery and beverage market, in addition to the restaurant.

Commissioners also approved a site plan for a nursing home facility at 897 E. 16th St. The one-story facility, titled The Avenue at Holland, will have 100 patient rooms, two courtyard areas and on-site daycare for employees.

Construction on the 84,725-square-foot facility is expected to begin in 2022, and developers hope to open in late summer 2023.
