Construction begins at Memorial Village on UND campus

Jul. 29—GRAND FORKS — The UND football program begins fall camp in a few days but the action around the Fighting Hawks' practice field is starting to pick up already.

That's because construction is underway at the

Memorial Village, a public-private partnership for a $40 million five-story structure

that will feature market-rate apartments as well as house UND football coaches and athletic department staff.

The Memorial Village development will be at the site of the former grandstand of

Memorial Stadium, which was torn down last March.

UND athletic director Bill Chaves said the hope is for the Memorial Village project to be completed in the summer of 2024.

Chaves added there will be two projects near the Fritz Pollard Center taking place around the same time frame.

In addition to the Memorial Village project, UND also hopes to start construction on the second phase of the Pollard Center. The Pollard Center, which was previously known as the High Performance Center, is UND's privately funded ($19.5 million) indoor practice facility and track, which opened in 2015.

The addition to the Pollard Center, which would include a football locker room and weight room, will be paid with private funds. The fundraising is ongoing but the process is nearing completion.

UND also hopes to install a new track and turf surface at the former Memorial Stadium site.

UND has scheduled an official groundbreaking at the Memorial Village project on Aug. 25.

"It's outstanding," Chaves said. "After Memorial came down, we were kind of waiting for that moving of dirt. When that happens, you start getting excited."
