City leaders are embarking on a multi-year reimagining of Davis Park in downtown Rockford from underutilized asset into what they hope becomes the city spot for gatherings and fun.

Among the first signs that something big is coming to Davis Park began this week: Construction of new boat docks.

Here's what you need to know about the Davis Park plan:

What's happening at Davis Park?

Construction crews from Sjostrom & Sons hired by Rockford are building boat docks.

How big will the docks be?

The docks will measure 72-feet long and 16-feet wide. A gangway with safety railings will lead down from the park to the docks.

How many boats will the docks hold?

There will be enough space for four to six boats depending on their size.

How much does the boat dock project cost?

The boat dock project will cost about $450,000, paid for with state grants. In addition to the docks, the grant also paid for repairs to the Rock River sea wall.

What will they it cost to dock my boat?

There will be no charge for boats to dock there, meaning for the first time, Rock River enthusiasts will be able to boat downtown and dock right outside the Embassy Suites by Hilton Rockford Riverfront for dinner, drinks or visiting shops.

When will the docks open?

Work is expected to be done June 1.

What else is coming to Davis Park?

The construction of the docks is just the first of what will be many new additions to the park in coming years with plans for a splash pad, amphitheater, sunning beach, playgrounds, skate park and nature areas.
