Construction site chaos — 2 take skid steer joyride, cause thousands in damage: GSPD (News 5 EXCLUSIVE)

GULF SHORES, Ala. (WKRG) — Gulf Shores Police say over the weekend at least two people broke into the Embassy Suites construction site, climbed the ladder to the top of the construction crane and then did thousands of dollars in damage to some heavy equipment.

A video was given to Gulf Shores Police anonymously showing a brief glimpse of a person high above the city inside the construction crane.

“It’s obviously at the top of the crane, which is probably 100 feet in the air,” Carl Wittstruck with Gulf Shores Police said.

While that’s bad enough, Wittstruck said what happened on the ground caused several thousands of dollars worth of damage.

“The second part we see the skid steer being driven recklessly around the construction site and being flipped,” Wittstruck said. The construction site is a block off the beachfront and is surrounded by a chain link fence.

“Do Not Enter” signs are posted everywhere.

“Somehow he gained entry into the site and decided to climb to the top of the crane and then drive the skid steer around,” Wittstruck said.

The damage was discovered Monday morning. Police believe it happened sometime over the weekend. The problem is they don’t know who the people in the video are.

“We would like to identify this person and speak to them, so any information anybody has would be greatly appreciated,” Wittstruck said.
