The Kenosha police union on Friday offered the most detailed accounting to date on officers' perspective of the moments leading up to police shooting Jacob Blake seven times in the back, saying he had a knife and fought with officers, putting one of them in a headlock and shrugging off two attempts to stun him. The statement from Brendan Matthews, attorney for the Kenosha Professional Police Association, goes into more detail than anything that has been released by the Wisconsin Department of Justice, which is investigating. The Sunday shooting of Blake, a Black man, put the nation's spotlight on Wisconsin and triggered a series of peaceful protests and violence, including the killing of two people by an armed civilian on Tuesday.
Brian Kilmeade would do well to remember President Trump and Joe Biden's houses are very much not created equal. On Friday morning, the Fox & Friends host and his co-hosts were discussing controversy over Trump's use of the White House for his Republican National Convention acceptance speech. Critics say it was unethical for Trump to use the federal building for a political purpose, and a violation of the Hatch Act for federal employees who participated in the convention.

Nearly 40 children are now safe and sound after a two-week operation involving state and federal authorities in Georgia. The U.S. Marshals Service, with help from state police and other local agencies, rescued 26 missing children and ensured the safe location of 13 others as part of “Operation Not Forgotten,” the agency announced Thursday. “These missing children were considered to be some of the most at-risk and challenging recovery cases in the area, based on indications of high-risk factors such as victimization of child sex trafficking, child exploitation, sexual abuse, physical abuse, and medical or mental health conditions,” authorities said.

Four militants were killed and another was arrested during the operation, a police statement said.
Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden's latest ads take direct aim at swing states and Latinx Americans across the country. Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny is backing the former vice president and Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) in the 2020 election, and lent one of his hits to a new ad for the Democrats. The ad features footage of excited President Trump fans in 2016 juxtaposed with a sparsely attended recent rally, as well as Trump's Bible photo-op and that time he hugged and kissed a flag.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's campaign has hired a Kentucky teenager known for his viral encounter with a Native American man at the Lincoln Memorial last year. Sandmann started his new role this month, and McConnell campaign manager Kevin Golden said they're “excited" to have him on board.
As NXIVM leader Keith Raniere awaits sentencing for using the self-help group as a sex cult for his personal pleasure, prosecutors say he is still issuing demands to his disciples from inside a prison cell, and has “demonstrated a complete lack of acceptance and responsibility for his crimes.” One of those commands was to “get scrutiny” on the Brooklyn federal judge who will issue his sentence for several sex crimes in October, prosecutors said in a sentencing memo filed late Thursday. Another was to get pundits, including Harvard professor Alan Dershowitz, to speak on his behalf.
Biscayne Park Detective Rodney Schwartz rode his police motorcycle over to Griffin Boulevard Tuesday morning after being told about a young girl who was “wandering aimlessly. When he found her, Sandra Bates, 13, was barefoot and disheveled and had that “thousand-yard stare,” Schwartz said. She couldn't say where she was from or where she was going.
Most Americans believe the US has handled the coronavirus pandemic badly according to a poll of advanced international economies. US and UK nationals were the only countries to give their national response a net negative, according to the poll by the Pew Research Center. The same survey found that Americans, by a large margin, believe the country is more divided than before the coronavirus outbreak.
The U.S. armed forces will have no role in carrying out the election process or resolving a disputed vote, the top U.S. military officer told Congress in comments released Friday. The comments from Gen. Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, underscore the extraordinary political environment in America, where the president has declared without evidence that the expected surge in mail-in ballots will make the vote “inaccurate and fraudulent,” and has suggested he might not accept the election results if he loses. Trump's repeated complaints questioning the election's validity have triggered unprecedented worries about the potential for chaos surrounding the election results.

Parents, school administrators and educators must instead weigh two bad options: isolate children at home or risk them getting and spreading COVID-19 through in-person contact. There are ways to limit the spread of the COVID-19, including masks and ventilation, but there is no way to guarantee zero risk of disease transmission in schools. At the same time, remote learning can exact its own toll, setting back children's mental health, academic achievement, and social development, and leaving their parents exhausted and demoralized.
The U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee announced contempt proceedings against Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Friday, citing his refusal to comply with a subpoena for records into his "transparently political misuse" of department resources. The Democratic chairman of the House of Representatives committee, Eliot Engel, also cited a speech Pompeo recorded in Jerusalem for this week's Republican National Convention. Engel said Pompeo had "demonstrated alarming disregard for the laws and rules governing his own conduct and for the tools the Constitution provides to prevent government corruption."
On a nondescript April night in 1990, 21-year-old Dale Wayne Sigler walked into a Brazoria County, Texas, Subway shop and robbed it of $400. When the man behind the counter, John William Zeltner Jr., attempted to flee into the back room, he was shot six times. The “overkill” nature of the crime implied that the two weren't mere strangers, and the ensuing revelation that Sigler knew Zeltner helped convince a jury that not only was he guilty of the crime—to which he confessed, after being apprehended—but that the execution had been premeditated.
Two conservation groups said they plan to sue a Hilton resort in Fort Lauderdale Beach for using outdoor lighting that harms and disorients protected sea turtles, which violates the Endangered Species Act. The Center for Biological Diversity and the Sea Turtle Oversight Protection (STOP) said they intend to sue the Bahia Mar Resort and Marina, a Hilton Double Tree hotel, if it doesn't change outdoor and indoor lighting practices. They are pressuring Hilton to comply with Fort Lauderdale's city code aimed at reducing the impact of artificial lighting on sea turtles during nesting and hatching season, which runs through October.

Boeing declined to identify the airlines involved, but United Airlines, Air Canada and Singapore Airlines confirmed that each has one plane grounded for inspection.
