Construction continues at Rock Cut State Park. What you need to know

Anyone heading out to Rock Cut State Park is reminded that a portion of the main road loop in the park is closed for a summer-long $4.5 million construction project.

Here's what you need to know:

What is being done?

The project includes culvert replacements, pavement removal and replacement, parking lot replacement, installation of bike lanes, new wayside signage, and disabled access to the new children's fishing pond.

What parts of the park is closed?

The project requires closing the eastern half of the park. The park road is be closed from Bay View picnic area to the campground road. The maintenance road is also closed to the public.

In addition, the bridge over the tollway to Olson Beach is closed, but the beach area will be open from the Harlem Road entrance. Trails that lead to the construction area are also closed to ensure the safety of hikers and bicyclists.

How do I access Rock Cut State Park?

To access Olson Lake, you must enter on Harlem Road. To access the rest of the park including the campground, you must enter on Illinois 173 (West Lane Road).

Is there signage directing the public away from the construction areas?

Barricades and signage are in place to warn visitors of the closures. Anyone going around the barricades will be subject to a fine of $195.

When will the construction be completed?

Weather permitting, the projected completion date is October.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is coordinating the project with the Illinois Department of Transportation.
