Construction of Elmwood Park's new ShopRite back on track

ELMWOOD PARK — Held up by the pandemic, the construction of the new Route 4 ShopRite is back on track.

Construction of the new grocery store is set to begin within the next couple of weeks, according to a letter by Inserra Supermarkets Inc.

The supermarket, to be built on the site of a former Kmart store, is planning to open to the public by the end of 2023. The 65,123-square-foot ShopRite will occupy the south side of the street between Iozia Terrace and East 53rd Street, just a few hundred yards from a Lidl supermarket. It will be the 10th Inserra-owned ShopRite in Bergen County.

"It’s a huge benefit for our residents to have a top-of-the-line supermarket in town," said Borough Administrator Michael Foligno. "It’s been quite a few years since Acme left us, and it has been difficult for our residents since then, especially for the elderly and people who don’t drive."

In the last five years, the stretch of Broadway lost Acme when it closed in October 2019, Pathmark after the company declared bankruptcy, and Kmart, which closed in 2018.

Lidl opened last fall at 58 Broadway, at the western end of Elmwood Park, which previously housed Acme and, before that, Pathmark.

ShopRite is owned by New Jersey-based Wakefern Food Corp., a retailer-owned cooperative, but the stores are operated by individually owned companies. Inserra is the largest operator of ShopRite stores, with 23 in Bergen, Hudson and Passaic counties, as well as in Rockland County in New York.

"We look forward to being a part of the Elmwood Park community and forming a partnership together to serve you better," said Chairman and CEO Lawrence R. Inserra Jr.
