Construction for large storage complex underway along Highway 3 in North Kitsap
NORTH KITSAP — Construction is underway on a new storage complex with several buildings along Highway 3 just north of Poulsbo city limits.
The Coppertop Storage Poulsbo development will have about 100,000 square feet of storage space, said Doug Nelson, who owns the site with his wife, Karina.
A chunk of the space will be designated for boats and RVs.
“There really isn’t any covered boat or RV storage in the county,” Doug Nelson said. “We kind of expect to see what kind of demand there is. I think there’s a demand. If I look at how many boats and RVs are driving across the Hood Canal Bridge on the weekends, I’m sure a lot of people would rather not drag their boat and RV all the way back to Seattle and home and leave it at the facility."
The complex will also have climate-controlled spaces with larger doors that can fit sprinter vans or camper conversions, as well as smaller spaces for household goods and personal items, he said, noting that all the storage spaces will be in single-story buildings that customers can drive up to.

Construction is underway at the site, which is a little more than 5 acres in size, tucked between Ryen Drive and Highway 3, near the Snider Park baseball fields. The Nelsons bought the property for $950,000 in August 2021, according to Kitsap County property records.
The project has a target completion date of late June 2023, Doug Nelson said.
The Nelsons also own the Coppertop Park business development on Bainbridge Island, off Sportsman Club Road, and operate a storage complex there as well.
“If they’re successful,” Doug Nelson said of the storage projects, “we’ll do more of them.”
The Coppertop project north of Poulsbo is a short distance from where another large storage complex has been proposed, in the College Marketplace development near Poulsbo’s Home Depot. That project, proposed by the Arlington-based developer Cascadia Group under its Armor Storage brand, would have five buildings and a range of storage types, the group's founder told the Kitsap Sun in August.
