Construction supply company hopes to fill growing demand in Brunswick County
Hoping to take advantage of the area's housing boom in recent years, Professional Builders Supply is expanding its presence in Brunswick County, opening a new location in Shallotte.
The construction supply company already serves the area from its Wilmington location, according to a company news release, but the new location will help them be more responsive to Brunswick County customers.
Hansen Matthews, realtor with Maus Warwick Matthews & Company, helped broker the expansion to their Shallotte location. Hansen's company brokers real estate deals throughout most of the state on every kind of sale except residential and resort property.
He said the area's growth in population and housing developments are what attracts companies to Brunswick County.

"Retail, restaurant, medical, it all follows either the traffic count, or follows population growth and Brunswick County has both of those in all three major townships of Leland, Southport and Shallotte," Mathews said.
“The main thing driving the growth in Brunswick County is the explosion of residential development. I’ve been brokering here for a few decades, and there's never been anything like the last three years, including the boom that we had from 2004 to 2006.”
While the substantial growth in Brunswick County over the last decade is no secret, Matthews said the most recent boom starting around the pandemic has been of a different character.

“The shift that we've seen is more people are choosing to move here before retirement, that's the main difference," he said. "Now that people are discovering that many of them can work from any place, they choose to work from someplace that's nice and warm and coastal and affordable."
Matthews said in expanding into Shallotte, Professional Builders Supply is preparing to fill what they expect to be an increased demand for construction materials locally. And based on the recent trends, he said it makes sense.
"For many years, we've had people retiring here, but all of a sudden I think we're getting a slightly different twist," Matthews said. “I don't see it slowing down anytime soon.”
