Construction worker falls 60 feet to his death at Hyundai plant in Georgia, officials say
A construction worker died after falling three stories at the site of a future Hyundai manufacturing plant in Georgia, the company said.
The man was a subcontractor working on April 29 in an area of the plant that will become the paint shop when the facility is complete, Hyundai Motor Group U.S. communications director Michael Stewart told McClatchy News in an email.
As he was working 60 feet in the air, it appears his equipment malfunctioned.
“Initial information indicates the individual’s safety harness lanyard failed,” Stewart said. “Together with the contractor and the relevant authorities, we are fully supporting the investigation to understand the full circumstances of the incident to ensure this type of accident does not reoccur.”
The company did not release the exact cause of the fall.
He later died from his injuries, the company confirmed.
A funeral home identified the worker as 35-year-old Victor Javier Gamboa Cajija, of Statesboro, in a May 2 Facebook post.
The funeral home said Gamboa Cajija died “as a result from injuries sustained in a workplace accident at the construction site of the Metaplant America manufacturing facility in Bryan County.”
Funeral arrangements will be made at a later date, the home said.
The Hyundai plant, being constructed in Bryan County, is the largest economic deal in the state’s history and once completed will be Hyundai’s first electric vehicle manufacturing plant, The Associated Press reported.
The plant will hire 8,000 workers upon opening in 2025, according to the Associated Press, and hopes to manufacture 300,000 electric vehicles annually.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating Cajija’s death, the Associated Press reported.
The plant’s development is under the supervision of the Savannah Harbor-Interstate 16 Corridor Joint Development Authority, according to its website.
The authority “offers its condolences to the family, friends and coworkers of the subcontractor who died on April 29 at the construction site for Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America. The employee was employed by a subcontractor on the site,” authority representative Angela Hendrix told McClatchy News in an email. “Hyundai Motor Group’s, Hyundai Engineering America’s, and the subcontractor’s primary concern has been and will continue to be the safety and security of everyone on the construction site. They are fully cooperating with the investigation.”
The Hyundai plant is located 226 miles southeast of Atlanta.
