Our consumer warrior Clark Howard says if you want the best interest rates on your auto loan, you need to score above 720.

Clark adds that you should rely on yourself to check your credit score, and not the banks, credit unions, or car dealerships. What’s the best way to check?

“Credit cards you have typically give you a daily update on your credit score for free, just by looking at the app for your credit card or going on the website and signing in for your credit card,” says the Consumer Warrior.

Clark suggests joining a credit union before buying a new or used car. “The average vehicle loan from a credit union is almost two percentage points lower than the average car loan from a bank.”
