Contact lost with Azovstal fighters - Mariupol mayor

STORY: Mayor Vadym Boichenko said on national television that contact had been lost with the Ukrainian fighters still in the sprawling steel works.

"There is no contact to understand what is going on, whether they are safe or not... We pray for our heroic boys", he added.

Boichenko said also that more than 30 children were among those awaiting evacuation from the plant in the Sea of Azov port city, which has been devastated by weeks of Russian bombardment.

The first evacuees from Azovstal arrived by bus in Zaporizhzhia on Tuesday (May 3) after cowering for weeks in bunkers beneath the sprawling Soviet-era steel works.
