Contestants face off in key lime pie eating contest

Wearing their safety goggles, hands clasped behind their backs, twenty five contestants plunged face down into nine-inch pies and scarfed down the region's signature dessert to participate in the World Key Lime Pie Eating Championship in Key West, Florida, to mark the U.S. Independence Day on Sunday (July 4).

Seattle resident Nicholas Luera won the contest, finishing an entire pie in two minutes and 13.5 seconds, according to the Florida Keys news bureau.

"In New York they've got the hot-dog contest, and that's great and all, but in Key West, we've got the real contest. It's a speed-eating round, face first, all one and done, Key lime pie. I think that's where it's at," Luera said.
