Continent Bakery is back

Good news for those having Bismarck withdrawals. The wait for the doughnut-like jam-and-cream-stuffed pastries— as well as many other tasty treats — is finally over. Continent Bakery, beloved by many in this corner of the SouthCoast, is reopening it doors on Friday after being in hiatus since July. Time to stock up on sweet bread, real cream pastries, doughnuts, malassadas, pies, Portuguese sandwiches (from cacoila to chourico), stuffed quahogs, bread, cakes for all occasions and much more. But don't expect a quick visit if you're popping in on opening day. You'll likely be greeted with crowds from all over filing in for their long-missed Ocean Grove sweets. So mark your calendar and get there early for first dibs. Continent Bakery, located at 198 Pinehurst Ave., Swansea. Their last Facebook post from June indicates they are open 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday.

Black Salt in the spotlight

If you haven't yet made it to the new Black Salt in Swansea, maybe its upcoming TV spot will help entice you. The 481 Wilbur Ave. restaurant welcomed some special visitors this week as "Phantom Gourmet" crew popped in for a taste and a closeup of their menu. "Phantom Gourmet, an absolute pleasure to have you visit us and showcase our operation! Thanks for making this Wednesday night even more special for our family and friends!" reads a post on Black Salt's Facebook page. The popular food-related program features profiles of New England restaurants, and over the years has spotlighted several SouthCoast eateries. Now all eyes will be on one of the town's newest additions — run by sibling team Tania Novo and Joshua Conceicao — which has garnered quite a following since its December 2022 debut. The American-style bistro focuses on locally sourced food, craft beers and signature cocktails, as well as "outside of the box" offerings such as Cajun-Crusted Octopus, Poutine Special, BBQ Duck Quesadillas and “Big Mac” Flatbread. You can watch "Phantom Gourmet" on Saturdays and Sundays at 10 and 11 a.m. on TV38 (Boston); Saturday at 11:35 p.m. on WBZ-4 (Boston); Sunday at 10 a.m. on CW28.

You'll be lovin' it at Piri Piri

Have it your way at Piri Piri Kitchen this weekend. You won't find a Happy Meal there, but you'll find McDonald's inspired meals that will make you happy. The Somerset eatery is putting its own spin on fast food favorites — think McD's but elevated — with some of its specials. Try their Big Mac Egg Rolls App, Mac Daddy Double or their Big Mac Flat Bread Pizza, perfect for a no-cook Friday night that doesn't involve a greasy fast food bag. Weekend specials also include the Avô Alberto Clams App, Bacalhau Á Espahola, Grilled Octopu, Jumbo Baked Stuffed Shrimp, Chicken Madeira, and soup of the day. Top it off with a something sweet with their peanut butter pie, sweet rice, apple crumb, chocolate mousse cake, banana cake, chocolate mousse toffee pie, flan and more. Autumn is underway, marked by the launch of new updated fall menus Lafrance Hospitality's SouthCoast locations, which include popular dining spots such as Bittersweet Farm Restaurant and Tavern, Galley Grille and Ten Cousins Brick Oven. At Bittersweet, located at 438 Main Road, Westport, indulge in a variety of delectable fall flavors. Highlights include Farmhouse Meatloaf, Butternut Ravioli, Steak Frites, Bittersweet Land and Sea,Chicken Parmesan, Scrod and Necks, Fig-Glazed Chicken, Tavern Burger, Butternut Squash and Apple Flatbread, Harvest Salad and Kale Crunch Salad. Fellow Lafrance restaurant, the Galley Grille at White's of Westport (66 State Road), is serving up seasonal delights such as Chourico and Little Neck Mozambique, Cranberry Bog Salad, Chicken Florentine, Vodka Tortelloni, BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich, and Whisky Ribeye. And at Ten Cousins Brick Oven, located at 977 Main Road, Westport, try the Noquochoke Pizza, Half Brick Chicken, Leah's Lasagna, and for kids there's Franks in a Blanket.

Portugalia marks a milestone
