Contractor for emergency repair work approved for $81,000 in Mifflinburg

Feb. 20—MIFFLINBURG — A Mifflinburg contractor will do emergency repair work on East Green Street after a sewer overflow in Mifflinburg.

At Tuesday night's public meeting, borough council members unanimously awarded Dave Gutelius Excavating Inc., of Mifflinburg, to do the work for $81,000. The work will include 235 feet of street work and the replacement of a manhole and sewer laterals.

"This was an emergency repair, so we didn't do bids," said borough project manager/supervisor Rob Rowe. "We just received quotes."

The borough had two quotes, including one from Fairchild Brothers Inc., of Winfield.

Solicitor Thomas A. Burkhart, of McNerney, Page, Vanderlin & Hall, of Williamsport, said the council members voted last month to designate the situation as an emergency because it affected "personal and public safety."

The borough will also seek bids for the structural work for the Fire Hall Door Replacement Project for the Mifflinburg Hose Company, at 325 Chestnut St, and quotes for structural inspection services.

The fire department needs to renovate the garage and outside street because they're not big enough to accommodate the incoming new ladder truck when it arrives in 2025. The fire company ordered a 100-foot aerial truck for $1.4 million and a new engine truck for $800,000 last year. However, the ladder truck is too large to fit in the bay garage as it is currently constructed with three other trucks.

The borough approved a variety of other quotes and bids at Tuesday's meeting. The following were approved:

An agreement from Herbert Rowland & Grubic Inc., of Lewisburg, for consulting for a new tot lot at the Mifflinburg Community Park at a cost of $630.

A bid of $303,478 from Mid-State Paving LLC, of Middleburg, for the 10th Street Water Main work. They also approved the Right-of-Way Agreement with Cabinetworks in relation to the 10th Street project.

Seeking quotes for engineering design for reconstruction work in the 100 block of Market Street.
