Controlled burn in Oconto loses control, burns about 32 acres
OCONTO, Wis. (WFRV) – Authorities say a controlled burn lost control in Oconto Monday afternoon and burnt about 32 acres of land.
According to a release from the Oconto Fire & Rescue, crews responded at 2:46 p.m. to the Oconto Sportsman’s Club on 605 Wedgewood Avenue for reports of a controlled burn fire that got out of control.

Firefighters first on the scene say they found a fire in the brush that was about 40 feet in diameter and was rapidly growing.
With the fire continuing to grow rapidly, multiple brush vehicles and a dozer from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) worked together to bring the fire back under control.
At the end of it all, officials say the fire was measured at 32 acres by the DNR, and a total of four engines, four rescue trucks, two UTVs, three tenders, one command vehicle, and 29 firefighters responded to the scene.
Additional resources were also provided at the scene by the DNR, the Oconto Police Department, the Oconto County Sheriff’s Office, and the Oconto County Emergency Management.
Officials say no civilian or firefighter injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

The Oconto Fire & Rescue using this incident as a reminder that any burning from January 1 through June 30 requires a permit.
Authorities add that all year a permit is needed to burn in the City of Oconto as well as notifying the Oconto County Sheriff’s Office to inform them with the intent to burn.
