Conwell-Egan tabs Truman's Tyrone Lewis as its new basketball coach

Conwell-Egan High School has named Tyrone Lewis as its new head boys basketball coach. Lewis comes to Conwell-Egan after spending the last four years as the head coach at his alma mater, Harry S. Truman High School.

"This is a pretty big step for me," Lewis said. "I'm leaving the SOL [Suburban One League] and stepping right into the Philadelphia Catholic League. They do things differently, and I've a lot of stuff to pick up on but I'm ready. It's a tremendous opportunity for me, and I'm looking forward to getting started.

“This is the opportunity of a lifetime. I am very honored to join the CEC team and work with these student-athletes. I look forward to adding to an already excellent legacy and competing in the Philadelphia Catholic League.”

Under Adam Bowen, Egan finished 4-14 but won two of its final three games. Truman was 12-26 in games coached by Lewis.

After becoming the all-time leading scorer in Lower Bucks County history, Lewis graduated from Truman in 2006. He continued his career at Niagara where he was selected to the Purple Eagles Hall of Fame.

While at Niagara, Lewis became the first freshman to be named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament most valuable player after Niagara won the conference title. He was named first-team all-MAAC, then helped the Eagles beat Florida A&M for their first NCAA tournament win in 37 years.

As a junior, he claimed first team all-MAAC honors and was named the MAAC defensive player of the year after coming up with 91 steals. He was selected second-team all-MAAC and was named to the Mid-Major Defensive All-American team as a senior.

When his college career ended, Lewis had amassed 1,849 points, 523 rebounds, 76 blocks, 395 made free throws and a program-best 86 wins. His 250 steals and 290 made 3-pointers are the most in school history. He is the only player in MAAC history to collect 1,500 points, 500 rebounds, 200 assists and 200 steals.

He was an assistant coach at Bensalem, then played one more year in Germany. In 2012, he became an assistant coach at Widener University.

In 2013, the same year he was inducted into the Bristol Township Athletic Hall of Fame, he became the head coach at Bristol High where he took the Warriors to two-straight District One Class 2A titles and consecutive appearances in the PIAA Class 2A tournament. In 2014, Bristol beat School of the Future, 52-47, but lost to Holy Cross in the second round, 59-52. The following year, the Warriors fell to Mastery Charter North in the opening round, 74-55.
