A look at the lineup of live concerts held at Cook's Garage has a typical theme of country. Not unsurprising in Lubbock, or West Texas as a whole.

But Mistie Kahl, owner of Cook's Garage, likes to mix things up with the acts she brings to town as much as she can.

Her latest dip into other genres has resulted in rap and hip-hop legend Ice Cube being joined by Cypress Hill and Bone Thugs N Harmony as part of the West Fest Tour sponsored by RNC Entertainment on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m.

"We want to be known for a little bit of everything," Kahl said. "I don't want to be solely Texas. We have a lot of really good friends that are in the Texas music scene, and we love to support them, too, but we want to bring in some national artists, too."

Though infrequent, Kahl has been able to bring in non-country acts before. Rap artist Nelly made a stop at Cook's Garage last October and Everclear stopped by in June for their 30th anniversary tour with Fastball and The Nixons.

Snoop Dogg was also booked to perform at the venue, but that show had to be canceled due to COVID-19. Kahl said she's constantly looking to bring other acts to town. Much of it comes down to the routing of each artists' tour and if it lines up with Cook's availability.

"I have some (artists) that are on my bucket list and I go after them," Kahl said. "I have offers on a lot right now. It's trying to figure out all your tours."

Ice Cube rose to prominence musically with N.W.A in the late 1980s. He went on to have a solo career before he dove head first into acting, starring in Boyz in the Hood, the Friday series and many others.

"He's iconic," Kahl said of Ice Cube. "That's going to be so cool that you can say Ice Cube is going to play here. ...For him to come to play Cook's is awesome for us. We're excited."

Cypress Hill may best be known for their hip-hop hits "Insane in the Membrane" and "(Rock) Superstar), which hit the airwaves in the 1990s. The group has sold over 20 million albums worldwide. They also became the first hip-hop group to have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2019.

Grammy-award winning group Bone Thugs N Harmony will also be on the bill. Signed to Ruthless Records in 1993, Bone Thugs is the only group that's worked with 2Pac, the Notorious B.I.G., Eazy-E and Big Pun when each artist was still alive.

It will be a busy weekend for Cook's Garage as the venue is set to welcome rising country group Midland for The Last Resort Tour on Friday night. It's part of the blend of acts Kahl hopes to make a regular feature.
