Cooler temperatures, possible rain forecast for High Plains through next week

After facing weeks of unwavering heat, dangerous storm systems and deadly tornadoes, the High Plains can expect to experience calmer, and cooler, weather in coming days.

Headed into the weekend, the National Weather Service offices in Lubbock and Amarillo have forecast cooler temperatures in the upper-80s in Amarillo and low-90s in Lubbock region -- up to 97 degrees in the Rolling Plains. There's also a possibility for scattered thunderstorms in the late afternoon and early evening with little to no risk of hail and tornadoes.

Nearly each day, there is rain potential between 30 to 50%, though that's subject to change as time passes.

On average, the mean maximum and minimum temperatures in Lubbock for the month of July are 93.4 degrees and 69 degrees, respectively, with Amarillo variating slightly cooler.
