Cooling shelters open throughout Lane County this week amid high temperatures

Many locations in Lane County are open this week for people to cool down as temperatures are forecast to hit the mid-90s on the Fourth of July holiday and Wednesday.

The best way to protect yourself from the harmful effects of excessive heat is to stay cool, stay hydrated and stay informed.

Eugene cooling shelters

City pools will be open on July 4, though with shortened hours so check ahead.

Water fountains and splash pads will be operating on the holiday from 10 a.m. - 7 p.m. at:

  • Fairmount Park E. 15th Ave. and Fairmount Blvd.

  • Oakmont Park 2295 Oakmont Way.

  • Skinner Butte Park 248 Cheshire Ave.

  • Washington Park 2025 Washington St.

Designated cooling centers will not be open on July 4. Hours this week:

  • Amazon and Petersen Barn community centers 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesday through Friday.

  • Hilyard Community Center 9 a.m-5:30 p.m. Wednesday through Friday.

  • Sheldon Community Center 8 a.m.- 6 p.m. Wednesday through Friday.

  • Campbell Community Center 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Wednesday through Friday.

  • Eugene Downtown Library 100 W. 10th Ave., 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Wednesday through Thursday and 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Friday through Sunday.

  • Bethel Branch Library, 1990 Echo Hollow Road, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday.

  • Sheldon Branch Library, 1566 Coburg Road, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday.

  • Emmaus Lutheran Church (ELCA), 1250 W. 18th Ave., Tuesday through Thursday 9 a.m.-noon; closed Friday and Saturday; 9:30–11:30 a.m. Sunday.

  • First Baptist Church of Eugene, 3550 Fox Meadow Road, 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 8:30 a.m.-12 noon Friday and 8:45 a.m.-noon.

  • Saint Vincent de Paul’s Eugene Service Station, 456 Highway 99N, 8 a.m.- 4:30 p.m. seven days a week.

  • Looking Glass Youth Sites New Roads (Ages 16 to 24), 941 W. 7th Ave., Eugene, 8:45 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesday and Friday.

  • Station 7 (Ages 11 to 20) 931 W. 7th Eugene, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

  • Oregon Department of Human Services, 2885 Chad Drive, Eugene, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesday through Friday.

  • Oregon Department of Human Services, 2101 11th Ave., Eugene, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesday through Friday.

Springfield

  • Springfield Public Library (inside City Hall at 225 5th St., 8 a.m-6 p.m. Wednesday, 8 a.m-7 p.m. Thursday; 8 a.m.–5 p.m. Friday, and 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday.

  • Bob Keefer Center: 250 S. 32nd St., 8 a.m-9 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and noon-5 p.m. Sunday. Signing into the facility is required.

  • Willamalane Adult Activity Center: 215 W. C St., 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Wednesday through Friday. Signing into the facility is required.

  • Oregon Department of Human Services, 101 30th St., 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesday through Friday.

Cottage Grove

  • Cottage Grove Community Center 700 E. Gibbs Ave., 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesday through Friday.

  • Oregon Department of Human Services, 305 Coop Court, 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Wednesday through Friday.

Veneta

  • Fern Ridge Service Center, 25035 W. Broadway Ave., noon-8 p.m. through Friday.

McKenzie Bridge

  • McKenzie Bridge Church, 56334 McKenzie Highway, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Thursday and 9:30 a.m-12:30 p.m. Sunday.

Florence

  • Oregon Department Human Services 3180 US-101, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesday-Friday.

Donations sought during heat wave

Lane County Human Services, the First Christian Church of Eugene's Helping Hands Program and CAHOOTS are seeking donations to help people without shelter deal with the heat. They ask for donations of:

  • Water bottles/Jugs (disposable and reusable)

  • Electrolyte packets

  • Spray bottles

  • Sunscreen

  • Lip balm

  • Aloe gel

  • Personal size fans

  • “Goo” filled bandanas

  • Cooling towels

  • Dried fruit/trail mix

  • Life straws

  • Water filtration systems

  • Single serve Gatorade packets

  • Sweat bands

  • Clothing: light long sleeve shirts, breathable shirts, light shorts, visors and hats, ankle socks, flip flops, doo rags, head wraps

  • Day shelters structures for shading

  • Parasol/umbrella

  • Fans

Donations can be dropped off at First Christian Church’s Helping Hearts Program, located at 1166 Oak St. in downtown Eugene through Thursday between 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
