Cop drove drunk with gun and open alcohol on Colorado road closed by crash, police say

When Colorado police at the scene of a fatal seven-vehicle pile-up Wednesday spotted a car approaching on Interstate 25, they were confused, KCNC reports.

All northbound lanes of the highway had been closed while police investigated and cleared the wreck, KWGN reported. Officers were surprised to see anyone driving on the highway.

But that wasn’t the half of it.

After stopping the vehicle, Greenwood Village officers discovered it was an unmarked Denver Police Department car, KUSA reported.

They arrested the driver, Sgt. Bryce Robert Jackson, on suspicion of drunken driving after finding open containers of alcohol and a handgun in the car, KCNC reported.

Officers also don’t know how Jackson managed to drive onto the northbound lanes of I-25, whose on-ramps had been shut down, KWGN reported.

Jackson, a patrol sergeant who has been a Denver police officer since 2004, was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving, prohibited use of weapons, careless driving, and open alcoholic container in a motor vehicle, KUSA reported.

He was off-duty at the time of the 8:30 p.m. incident, according to the station.

A motorcyclist died in the earlier seven-vehicle crash, KCNC reported.
