Copley defeats North Royalton in boys soccer opener

BOYS SOCCER

Copley 3, North Royalton 1

Copley coach David Antal had to wait a little longer than usual to find out what he had in 2022, but his squad didn’t disappoint in its season opener.

Anthony Worner put Copley on the board when he slotted one in the left corner on a pass from Matthew Luecke with 9:25 left in the first half.

The Copley faithful didn’t even have a chance to sit down before Luecke found Collin Link 15 seconds later to give the home team a two-goal edge.

Tommy Joniec cut that advantage to one with 31:20 remaining for the Bears (1-1), but Copley held on to win the nonleague game.

Link iced it with 31 seconds left when he found Owen Labbe for the final tally.

“We have a lot of new guys playing a lot of new positions,” Antal said. “Even our guys that have been around are playing different positions in club. It’s nice to get the first one out of the way.

“It’s a little more nervy than we wanted. I’d like to shout out Owen Labbe who worked his tail off. He started on JV B and got into a big game tonight and scored a goal that eased our suffering a little bit. We have some kinks to work out. At times we looked fantastic, but at times we looked like a team that hadn’t played a game yet.”

Western Reserve Academy 4, Walsh Jesuit 0

Jayden Gaynor scored once and recorded an assist, while keeper Brennan Christian had five saves in the Pioneers shutout of the visiting Warriors on Thursday.

BOYS GOLF

Springfield 178, Woodridge 193

Jacob Thomas led the Spartans with a 42 at Brookledge Golf Course on Thursday as Springfield (8-3, 7-3) posted Metro Athletic Conference win. Brady Hahn carded a 43, Conner Eckenrode scored 46 and Jordan Bradley turned in a 47 for the visitors. Woodridge was led by Will Schmeltzer's 7-over par 42.

Highland 159, Tallmadge 171

Drew Mamer and Ryan Przybysz each shot 2-over par 38s on Thursday at Brookledge to lead the Hornets to a Suburban League American Conference win. It was Highland's first dual match victory of the season.

Nordonia 165, Brecksville 173

At Ellsworth Meadows in Hudson, Mason Reville was the medalist for the host Knights, carding a 3-over par 39. Drew Kitzmiller shot a 41 to help Nordonia's cause. Brecksville was led by Jaden Bibbo's 41 in this Suburban League National Conference matchup.

VOLLEYBALL

Archbishop Hoban 25-27-25, Marlington 13-25-15

Sophia Day's 15 points and 13 assists led the unbeaten Knights to a three-game win over Marlington. Giana Mutersbaugh added 10 digs for Hoban (2-0).

Lake 25-25-25, Buchtel 8-11-4

The host Blue Streaks, behind Maddie Swartz, downed Bucthel on Thursday. Swartz had six kills and four blocks for Lake.

Barberton 25-25-25, Our Lady of the Elms 18-11-17

Ten of Mona Ries' 14 service points for the Magics were aces for Barberton (1-1). Carly Ondrus and Haley Lorenzo each had 12 assists for Barberton.

Tallmadge 25-21-20-25-15, Brecksville 17-25-25-19-9

It took five games and Zoe Rensel for Tallmadge to beat visiting Brecksville on Thursday. Rensel had 14 kills and six blocks for the Blue Devils. Lexi Gray led the hosts with 42 assists.
