Cops bust suspect in string of New Mexico shootings targeting Democrats

Police in Albuquerque, N.M. said Monday a suspect was in custody in connection with a string of shootings at the homes or offices of elected Democratic officials.

The identity of the suspect was not released, but Police Chief Harold Medina said at a news conference that the person was being held on unrelated charges as a number of search warrants were being executed.

“We’re just waiting to get a return on some of the information to ensure that everything we have, that the case we’re building is as strong as possible and to see what other aspects are involved,” Medina said.

No injuries have been reported in the shootings, which occurred in December and this month.

The intended targets were believed to include state Attorney General Raul Torrez’s former campaign office, the home the incoming speaker of the state House Javier Martinez, the home of state Sen. Linda Lopez and the office of state Sen. Moe Maestas — all Democrats.

The chief said a weapon used in at least one of the shootings had been seized.

“We have identified potential connections between some of the shootings, and detectives are pursuing every possible lead,” he said.

Medina did not disclose whether there were any other suspects under investigation.

Bernalillo County Commissioner Adriann Barboa and her predecessor Debbie O’Malley’s homes were also targeted.

“We’re worried and concerned that these are connected and possibly politically motivated,” Mayor Tim Keller said at a news conference.

“These are individuals who participate in democracy, whether we agree with them or not, and that’s why this act of violence, I think, has been so rattling for so many people.”
