Corazón Collective making a stop in Las Cruces for poetry readings, writing workshop

LAS CRUCES – The Texas and California-based Corazón Collective, a group of Latinx poets and writers, are traveling through New Mexico and El Paso between June 16 and 24 to present readings and host writing workshops.

Corazón Collective is made up of five members including Jen Yáñez-Alaniz (“Surrogate Eater”), jo reyes-boitel (“Michael + Josephine and the mouth”), Carmen Calatayud (“In the Company of Spirits”), Angelina Sáenz (“Edgecliff”) and ire’ne lara silva (“Cuicacalli/House of Song,” “flesh to bone”).

“We want to connect with other creatives and other communities, corazón first,” silva said in a news release.

Poetry readings will be held:

  • 7 p.m. June 16, Café Mayapán, El Paso (free)

  • 6 p.m. June 18, Nopalitos Galería, Las Cruces (free)

  • 7 p.m. June 20, Jules’ Poetry Playhouse, Placitas (free)

  • 7 p.m. June 22, National Hispanic Cultural Center, Albuquerque (free)

  • 7 p.m. June 23, El Museo Cultural de Santa Fe ($15 suggested donation)

Writing workshops will be held at select locations, including:

  • 1-3 p.m. June 17, Café Mayapán, El Paso – In the Palm of Our Hands: Testimonios and Manifestations, led by jo reyes-boitel ($50 registration)

  • 2-4 p.m. June 18, Nopalitos Galería, Las Cruces – Gritos: On Finding the Sources of Our Voices, led by ire’ne lara silva ($50 registration)

  • Noon-2 p.m. June 24, National Hispanic Cultural Center, Albuquerque – Corazón Collective Workshop Roundtable (free)

According to a news release, “the Corazón Collective came together naturally, through friendship and poetry. We are a group of women whose backgrounds and lives both connect us and make us distinct. We write towards liberation and transformation.”
