Corbin Board of Education honors JROTC leaders; enjoys excellent test scores

Nov. 21—CORBIN — The Corbin Independent Schools Board of Education met on Thursday to honor Colonel David Michael Farley and Sergeant Jerell Williamson and to congratulate the school district on their excellent KSA (Kentucky Summative Assessment) rating of second in the state.

Col. Farley and Sgt. Williamson are respected military veterans who now serve in a leadership capacity for the Corbin Independent School District JROTC (Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps) program. The Corbin Board of Education honored the two as the school district's November Difference Makers.

"They have been making a difference though the JROTC Program at Corbin High School...," Corbin High School Principal Steve Jewell said of the two officers. "We really appreciate all their hard work."

A large portion of the meeting was dedicated to congratulating the district as a whole on their excellent test scores. CISD ranked second out of 172 districts in the state of Kentucky, an accomplishment that stemmed, according to board member Keith Gibson, from "tremendous effort on the part of our teachers and staff to help our kids."

Board vice chair Carcille Burchette also credited teachers, and the district as whole, for being inviting and loving their work, which, in her eyes, helps to motivate students.

The general theme of the conversation, though, was that the district would not be satisfied until their rank of 2 turned into a rank of 1. Corbin Elementary Principal Chris Webb stressed that "constant preparation" was their path to even greater success.

Each school plans to celebrate their accomplishment in the upcoming days.

Superintendent David Cox exclaimed, "We celebrate a lot around here. We've been very blessed to have a lot to celebrate about."
