Many Democrats seem unable to come to terms with what the Republican Party has become. It is now an authoritarian outfit at every level, from the Republican state legislatures who've stripped governors' offices of their powers when a Democrat wins them on up to Donald Trump, American president, who is trampling the Constitution's separation of powers, particularly the mandate for Congress to provide oversight of the Executive Branch. Republicans have made preventing Certain People from voting a core plank in their platform. They have tried to cement their minority rule through extreme gerrymandering and packing the courts and preexisting anti-democratic features of our system, like the Electoral College. On September 11, North Carolina Republicans lied to their Democratic colleagues so they could ram through their budget bill while nearly all the Democrats were at a ceremony commemorating the terror attacks.
The entire concept of government as a vehicle for representing and promoting the interests of your constituents has essentially collapsed within the party, and given way to a kind of nihilist grift-o-rama where you swear allegiance to The Leader and try to bash the various Enemies—The Fake News Media, the "Democrat" Party, "illegals"—in grotesque spectacles where you score enough points to get a foothold in Republican politics. Establishing justice, providing for the common defense, promoting the general welfare—this stuff might feature in the Constitution, but it's no longer relevant for one of our two major political parties. What's relevant is to secure power, by any means, then use any means afforded by that power to keep it.
But many Democrats still seem confused about this, which might be why they invited former Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski to testify in the impeachment hearings that many Democrats are afraid to call impeachment hearings. Lewandowski is a know-nothing goon with zero expertise in any area of actual governance, so naturally, there's a widely held expectation that he will run for United States Senate in New Hampshire. It appears Ol' Lew saw the hearing as an opportunity to troll and torment his Democratic questioners. After all, what better way to set up a run for the higher chamber in Congress than by showing rank disrespect for members of the lower chamber? Trumpis is about the spectacle of bludgeoning the enemies, and Lewandowski kicked things off appropriately with Jerry Nadler.
"Is there a book and page number you can reference me to please?" Lewandowski said. "I don't have a copy of the report in front of me." This is the kind of absurd bullshit the authoritarians thrive on. It doesn't have to make sense. In fact, the point is it does not make sense, but that you are obligated to make sense. If you keep playing by the rules of Civility and Normal Standards and Procedures, I will eventually beat you into the ground and usher in some new methods. This continued throughout.
Various Democrats caught Lewandowski in some lies, and they fleshed out the case that Trump repeatedly attempted to obstruct justice in the Mueller probe. But it's just not clear whether this will make a lick of difference. Have you noticed that pretty much no Republican, except the defector Justin Amash, has ever asked a single question of any Mueller-related witness that attempted to get to the question of whether the president committed serious misconduct? They don't care. It's not relevant to them. It's certainly not relevant to members of The Base, who almost exclusively consume media where they will never hear a whisper about Trump's crimes. Our siloed and fragmented information system has made it largely impossible to hold elected leaders accountable.
It didn't help matters that Lewandowski repeatedly refused to answer questions while making perhaps the most spurious possible claim of executive privilege. Since, as Nadler pointed out in the beginning, Lewandowski only worked on the campaign—never in the administration, much less the White House—it's hard to see where this comes from except the shameless depths of Donald Trump's brain. Again, this is the nihilism at work: it does not matter if something makes any sense as long as it can be used as a sword or a shield against your enemies. Eventually, Democrats began to call on Nadler to hold Lewandowski in contempt.
But it does not look like he will face any real consequences, and this is becoming a serious problem for the Democrats. No True Believer Trumpist is going to come to a Democratic committee hearing and answer questions in good faith. (In the Republican Senate, the hearings won't be held at all.) Even the more traditional Republican figures involved, like Don McGahn, have used all the tools at their disposal to avoid testifying and would probably use more to avoid talking if they were dragged in. Democrats will have to decide if it is worth it to call witnesses who are consumed with the authoritarian impulse, and if it is, they must be prepared to meet them with legal force—a move which risks making them a martyr and boosting their appeal with The Base. But force is what people like Lewandowski respond to. There have to be concrete consequences, or his lizard brain will see no downside to lying and obfuscating and trolling until the clock runs out. Things like ethics or the truth, of course, are for libtards.
As proof, Lewandowski openly admitted he lies all the time—but only to the lyin' media!
Lewandowski, dripping with disdain, all but admits he lied during media interviews, prompting the audience to gasp at his brazenness. Hard to believe this guy is considering a run for US Senate. pic.twitter.com/cwLf3NEI2E— Aaron Rupar (@atrupar) September 17, 2019
Here's a guy who might be about to launch a Senate bid openly admitting he regularly lies in public. The people who railed day and night for years about Hillary Clinton's use of private email for official business got into office and proceeded to use private email for official business. Ivanka Trump claimed she was unfamiliar with the rules! We are in different territory now, and we will continue to sink deeper into the abyss if the only other political party we have does not wise up and realize it's in the fight of its life against the forces of authoritarianism. That goes for mainstream media, too, which still prints what these incurable shitheads say with reckless abandon, and, in the case of CNN, invites them on after they just told you they lie to the media all the time.

It's time for anyone who cares about the concept of objective reality to get a grip on the fact that while the rest of us are playing soccer, these folks have picked up the ball and are playing rugby. It might be time to use your hands.
