Cornell wrestling named NCAA Team of The Week

ITHACA, N.Y. (WETM) – The Cornell University wrestling team capped off a memorable weekend with a special honor.

The Big Red was named the NCAA Team of The Week after three big dual meet wins. Cornell beat Harvard (37-6) and Brown (47 to -1) kicking off their IVY League Conference slate and followed that up with a 20-16 upset win over then #2 Missouri in front of a strong crowd at Newman Arena.

Sunday’s win over Missouri was the highest ranked win over an opponent ever at home for The Big Red.

Cornell has now jumped up to ninth overall in the NCAA Coaches Rankings and looks to continue the momentum after a strong weekend. The Big Red (7-3) hosts Columbia (1-7) this Friday night at 6:30 PM on ESPN+

Also of major note, Cornell All-American Jake Cardenas was named EIWA Wrestler of The Week for his strong effort on the mat. Cardenas went a perfect (3-0) on the weekend and upset third-ranked Rocky Elam of Missouri 4-0. Cardenas is now ranked seventh in the country in the latest rankings at 197 pounds by Intermat.
