CHEBOYGAN — On Sunday, teams competed against one another to be crowned champion of the cornhole tournament, while helping raise funds to send the Mid Michigan College Lakers Softball team to spring training in Florida.

This was the second year in a row this event has been hosted at Spare Time Lanes to help the athletes attend training camp and pay for their expenses. These athletes include Myia White, graduate of Cheboygan High School and catcher for the Lakers.

Cornhole players from all over the state, as well as several local players, including Mary Hebert, participated in the fundraiser tournament on Sunday.

"We started advertising for the tournament about a month ago," said Ron White, Myia's dad. "We have teams from all over the state."

The tournament started at noon of Feb. 13, and was limited to 32 teams who could register. The tournament had been full for several weeks before the event, with the cost of $50 per team of two people to enter.

On Sunday, there were five different sets of cornhole boards set up in different locations on the south end of the bowling alley for the tournament. This allowed multiple games to be played at once, as people worked through the brackets.

Prizes were awarded to the best team. There were also several other raffles going on during the event and drawings for gift baskets, to help raise more funds for the softball team to go to their spring training. Several members of the softball team helped to run the tournament and the raffles, and handing out the prizes.

"They leave in about three weeks," said White.

There were a number of people who helped make this event happen last weekend, including the bowling alley, Oaklawn Laser Works, Nick Connors, Linda and Dan Johnson, Linda and Harold Hoogerhyde, Walmart, Duncan City Pizza, the 211 Bar and Grill, Mulligan's, Pier 33, the Chateau at Black Mountain, Koko's Kitchen, Kortni and Tom Crawford, Bronze Tanning Salon and Carquest.
