Fire officials say a body was found as firefighters responded to a fire in this two-story home on Norman Street on Corning's Northside.

The man killed in a fire Saturday afternoon at an 80 Norman St. home on the city’s Northside has been identified as William Tapper.

Corning Fire Chief Brad Davies said Tapper’s body was found by firefighters after the blaze was extinguished Saturday.

Davies said the fire was started by an auxiliary heating device in a second-floor bedroom.

On arrival to a fire with possible entrapment, firefighters found a single-family residence with fire on the first and second floors.

Tapper, 72, was the lone occupant and died as a result of the fire, Davies said.

There were no other injuries to civilians or firefighters as a result of the incident.

An investigation was conducted by the Corning Fire Department with the assistance of the Corning Police Department and the New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control.
