Corning man killed in Chemung County crash, deputies say

One person is dead following a one-vehicle crash early Saturday morning in the town of Catlin.

The Chemung County Sheriff's Office identified the victim as Wesley M. Grinnell, 26. Grinnell was from Corning, according to his obituary.

The crash took place around 3:15 a.m. Saturday on Culver Hill Road in Catlin, the sheriff's office said.

Responding deputies determined Grinnell was eastbound in a Yamaha side-by-side utility task vehicle when he missed a curve, causing the vehicle to travel off the south shoulder of the road, strike an earth embankment and roll over several times.

Grinnell was ejected from the UTV as a result, investigators said.

Grinnell was transported to Arnot Ogden Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries, and then transferred to Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, where he later died.

The sheriff's office said further investigation into the crash indicated Grinnell was speeding, was not wearing a seat belt or helmet, and was under the influence of alcohol.

The Chemung County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Erway Ambulance, Beaver Dams Fire Department and the Schuyler County Sheriff’s Office.
