Corning Restore begins construction after fire

CORNING, N.Y. (WETM) – The Steuben County Habitat for Humanity Restore building in Corning, which had a portion of the building burn down back in July, has begun reconstruction.

The demolition of the donation section of the store began this past week, part of phase one of the project to get the Restore back up and running.

“So that’s part of our phase one, getting the building tore down. Then phase two is to come inside and give it a remodel. Phase three was start pretty much getting everything ready to open the doors back up,” said Executive Director Steve Daniels.

The portion of the building that burned was the section that housed the donations. Daniels says this section will not be rebuilt. Instead, he says they are looking to come up with some type of plan for the area, which will now be outside of the building.

“The part of the building that did get damaged was where all of our donations get dropped off by the public so that part will remain closed or not rebuilt,” said Daniels. “We might do something with it as far as in the summertime, maybe have some donations out there. We’re not exactly sure yet.”

Daniels says that they would love if the building could open back up tomorrow, but that after speaking to the construction crew, a realistic time that he could aim for would be the end of the summer.

This completion time is not set in stone but is the case for the building for the time being.
