Coronado goes 1-2 in pool play at state 7-on-7 football tournament

Coronado will compete in the consolation bracket of the Division I state 7-on-7 tournament Saturday to conclude the event in College Station.

The Mustangs went 1-2 in pool play Friday and dropped to the consolation bracket after a three-team tie for second place. Longview went undefeated to win Pool A — which also included Cypress Falls and White Settlement Brewer — and advance to the championship bracket.

The top two teams in each pool qualified for the championship bracket.

Coronado beat Brewer 26-12 for its only win Friday. The Bears edged Cypress Falls 26-20, and Falls topped Coronado 27-18. The Eagles grabbed the second spot in the top bracket by virtue of total points scored.

Because of their head-to-head win over Brewer, the Mustangs took the third seed. Coronado will start bracket play against El Paso Eastwood, which got last in Pool I. The Troopers went 0-3 against Klein Cain, Lake Dallas and North Crowley.

The first round of the 32-team consolation bracket begins at 8 a.m. The consolation championship is scheduled for noon.
