New scenes on the ITV soap will see the character take a DNA test, where he learns that he has Italian heritage – though it's only 8%.
While Mary objects to him going on a mission to find his long-lost Italian relatives, especially as it's such a low percentage, Brian is determined to follow through.
In new scenes airing next week, Brian and Mary put their argument behind them, though she despairs when Brian receives an email from a family tree website telling him of his Italian cousin, Isabella.
Planning a trip to Italy to stay with his cousin, Brian asks Rita if she'll look after The Kabin while he's away, though she refuses.
As a result, he asks Mary. Telling her of his plans to go to Italy and that he needs her help, Mary assumes he wants her to go with him, and tells him she'd be delighted to.
However, Brian gets an email from Isabella telling him that she wants to visit him in Weatherfield instead, as her Naples flat is being renovated. Brian and Mary are therefore left disappointed.
Brian actor Peter Gunn recently spoke about his character finding love again, saying that he would like to see Brian with Mary.
"I'd love it! They are both quite surreal and off-the-wall and work together very well. They could be a very strong pairing, and I love working with Patti," he told Inside Soap.
"Characters like Brian and Mary provide light relief alongside the hard-hitting storylines; not to say that's frivolous or meaningless, but it gives the balance of light and shade that Corrie does so well."
Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
