Coronation Street spoilers follow.

Coronation Street has brought in Tyrone Dobbs' long-lost mum Cassie Plummer this summer, but it's a storyline twist that's been years in the making.

The long-running soap retconned Tyrone's backstory in 2018 as surprising new information was revealed about classic character Jackie Dobbs, who'd always been known as his mother.

Jackie hasn't been mentioned much during the current saga, so if you need a quick refresher on exactly how she fitted into Tyrone's life, look no further.

Long-term Corrie fans may remember that Jackie, played by Margi Clarke, made her first appearance as Tyrone's wayward mum in March 1998.

Jackie was introduced as Deirdre Barlow's (then Deirdre Rachid) cellmate, as the soap legend served time in prison after being framed for fraud.

Deirdre's prison ordeal didn't last for long and Jackie soon became a free woman too, integrating into the Weatherfield community in the months that followed.

This ultimately led to the introduction of Tyrone in November 1998, as the show began to explore Jackie's family life and her chaotic approach to motherhood.

Jackie left Weatherfield in 1999 but Tyrone stuck around for good, moving in with Jack and Vera Duckworth.

Corrie reintroduced Jackie in 2008 following a nine-year absence and she appeared on and off until 2010, stirring up trouble for Tyrone's relationship with Molly at the time. This was her final stint in the show.

In July 2018, Corrie aired emotional scenes for Tyrone as he received a visit from the police, who informed him that Jackie had died.

This storyline was written in to facilitate the arrival of Maureen Lipman as Tyrone's grandmother Evelyn Plummer.

Following Jackie's death, Tyrone began looking into his family history and was shocked by some major revelations.

Tyrone's dad Darren confirmed that he and Jackie were not his biological parents, but they raised him as their own.

Darren told Tyrone in 2018: "I like you, Tyrone, but I'm not your dad. But I was the closest thing that came to it for a long time."

This was verified when Tyrone tracked down Evelyn, who confirmed that she didn't trust her drug-addict daughter Cassie to look after him properly when he was a baby.

Evelyn abandoned Tyrone at a police station in 1982, hoping that a police officer would find him and take it from there.

Desperate for a child, Jackie found Tyrone first and treated him as her own son.

Darren went along with it because Jackie was "easier to be around" with a child, and he was glad to be "bumped up the council house waiting list".

The retcon brought us Evelyn as a new regular for the show – and is now doing the same with Cassie five years later.
