Coronation Street star Samuel Robertson has admitted he was "gutted" over his character Adam Barlow's split from Sarah.

The two characters broke up last year amid Adam's jealousy over Damon Hay being the father of Sarah's child, and is currently unhappy over Sarah starting a relationship with Damon again.

As such, he has made a deal with Damon's killer brother Harvey Gaskell in prison, offering him representation if he can scare Damon off.

Reflecting on the split, Samuel said: "I’ve always really loved Adam and Sarah together and I’ve always believed in them so when I was told they were breaking up I was pretty gutted personally but in terms of the storyline it was exciting.

"I’ve always thought that one day maybe they’ll get back together," he added.

Speaking about why Adam is risking everything for Sarah, the actor explained: "I think ultimately Adam’s doing this because he loves Sarah so much and I think he’s being blinded by the love he has for her.

"He’s willing to sacrifice his own profession, possibly his own liberty, his own reputation to save Sarah so I think that shows the extent of how much he really loves her."

Amid his recent mental health struggles, Samuel explained that Adam's latest actions have put "fire" back in his belly.

"I think he’s coming through that now, when he was first learning about everything Sarah had done it was horrifying and he really struggled with his mental health," he recalled.

"But he’s now got the fire in his belly back, he’s got that steel within him and he’s decided he’s not going to be rolled over and messed about by anybody.

"His whole life was unmoored, he was all at sea and he really struggled, now he’s trying to take that control back. He’s found his groove, he’s decided what his objective is but we’ll see how that plays out."

Asked whether Adam is worried about the eventual reaction to him representing Harvey, the star revealed that "at this moment in time he doesn’t really care" and "just wants to get rid of Damon at all costs".

"If anything he’s lost all sense of reason, he’s willing to torch his whole reputation in Weatherfield to get rid of this guy who doesn’t even really live here," he added. "He’s blocking any possible guilt out, I think he’s a bit delusional."

Samuel went on to praise Harvey and Damon stars Will Mellor and Ciarán Griffiths, calling them "both really good actors".

"I’ve watched them from afar and been a big fan of their work," he added. "I worked with Ciarán a lot last year which was great. The first time I worked with Will was a few weeks back, he’s quite a big personality and I was quite intimidated to work with him at first.

"When you start working with new actors and they’re really good it can be intimidating, especially when you’ve got a lot of two handers, but after the first couple of takes I felt like I’d gained his trust, there was good camaraderie and the chemistry was there and it felt like we were creating something really good for on screen so long may it continue.

"I’m really enjoying working with both of them."

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
