Coronation Street and Waterloo Road star Ryan Clayton has revealed he has recently been diagnosed with ADHD.

The actor shared the news in a post on Instagram, along with a string of photos depicting what it is like to have the condition.

Clayton said: "Well, after 2 an a half years of realising you don’t 'grow out' of ADHD, just because you’re not hyperactive in the way you were as a kid, and 29 years later I’m an official member of club ADHD.

"I can tell you it’s a lot more than being fidgety and it shouldn’t be underestimated either."

In the candid post he shares that while there is a stigma around the condition, receiving an official diagnosis has given him clarity and has helped him to be able to talk openly about his ADHD.

"In the 2 years it took to get diagnosed, despite initial confusions and frustrations," he said, "I’ve had an acceptance and a much better understanding [of how] my mind works for some time now."

Clayton played mechanic Josh Tucker in Coronation Street back in 2018, in a hard-hitting storyline which saw Josh befriend and later rape David Platt.

He returned for a couple of guest stints in the soap over the next two years, where Josh eventually faced justice for his crimes and was sent to prison for 15 years.

More recently, Clayton has appeared as Sergeant Mike Rutherford in Waterloo Road, the husband of deputy head Joe Casey (James Baxter).

He appeared briefly in series 11, before having a bigger role in series 12, a change Clayton was very happy about.

In an interview, he said: "I’m having a great time working on the show, as it’s a brilliant environment. I’d love to delve more into Mike’s backstory and who he is as an individual – not just Joe’s husband – and getting to see that throughout.

"As you’ll see throughout this new series, Mike does get more involved in the show. I’m having an absolute ball on the show and long may that continue."

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
