It sounds like Gemma Winter's mum Bernie is going to cause a bit of a stir on Coronation Street as she arrives on the cobbles.

Casualty's Jane Hazlegrove has joined the soap as Bernie, though it seems that her character's behaviour may convince Gemma that she is after her boyfriend Chesney.

According to The Sun, Bernie's flirtatious and tactile nature will lead Gemma to accuse her mum of trying to steal her other half away.

Chesney is convinced of it too, making his behaviour very strange – all the while, however, Bernie is completely oblivious.

The arrival of Bernie was announced last month, and her character has been described as "an old raver who still sees herself as a free spirit".

She has a strained relationship with her kids after letting them down on multiple occasions, though arrives to support Gemma through her pregnancy.

"I'm thrilled to be joining Coronation Street," Jane previously said in a statement. "It's where I started by apprenticeship as a very young actor. I can't wait to get stuck in."

Gemma actress Dolly-Rose Campbell has also spoken about her on-screen mother's arrival, saying: "We have heard so much about her and not much of it is good, so I think we will get a real insight into what made Gemma the person she is today.

"For Gemma to have her mum there when she is pregnant is perfect. Paul is suspicious of Bernie's motives for turning up, but Gemma wants to give her a chance."

Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 7.30pm and 8.30pm on ITV.
