Coronation Street tonight (August 14) aired a betrayal in the ranks as Stephen Reid dropped Peter Barlow into trouble over the missing watch.

Previously, Peter stole Rufus' watch and sold it the pawnbrokers for some money. Early on in tonight’s episode, Lou told Carla and Stephen that the police were looking into the missing watch as well as an incriminating tie-pin left at the scene of Rufus' murder after Stephen killed him off.

Meanwhile, Stephen stole Lou’s hotel key from her bag before overhearing Peter calling a pawnbroker. Stephen confronted Peter about this and asked about the watch.

Peter, back-pedalling desperately, finally gave in and told Stephen he truth — that he took the watch. Peter said that instead of handing the watch in after it was left in his car, he sold it for £15,000.

Stephen comforted Peter and told him that “opportunity knocked.” Peter thanked him for his understanding and support. Later on, Stephen broke into Lou’s hotel room and searched through her belongings. He then found his missing tie-pin and pocketed it before almost being caught by Rufus’ son, Jools. However, he escaped unseen.

Outside the hotel room, however, Stephen bumped into Lou and admitted he was “nervous” because he had to tell her something. Meanwhile, Peter told Carla that the watch has been sold, provoking fury from Carla. Carla told Peter that Stephen is the only person he can trust.

Later, Lou confronted Carla and Peter, furious. Peter said they were going to explain but Lou revealed that Stephen had already told her what happened. Peter apologised to Lou, but she told him to “stuff his apology” and asked for the real reason.

“I didn’t think you’d miss it. I felt he had it coming,” Peter said, talking about Rufus. Lou said that Rufus was many things but never a villain, before demanding that they pay her back. Lou declared that she would honour their current contract but that, after that, they were dead to her. She then stormed out.

Peter and Carla then confronted Stephen at the pub, demanding to know why he threw them under the bus. Stephen defended himself, saying he did it for. But Stephen was taken aback when they informed him Lou pulled out.

Carla, angry with both men, then declared that the sale was off and that she would return to the factory. Peter and Carla licked their wounds together, with Carla informing Peter that until Stephen isn’t useful to her, he will still remain. Stephen, meanwhile, disposed of the incriminating tie-pin down the drain and breathed a sigh of relief.

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
