EAST COBB, GA — Pope High School’s team is benched for now after someone connected with the team tested positive last week for COVID-19.

A spokesperson for Cobb County schools wouldn’t say if the case was a student or staff member, according to multiple media reports. He said that the “team will not meet until contact tracing protocols have been repeated.”

The spokesperson also wouldn’t say if the person who tested positive participated in last Friday’s win over Wheeler High School.

The positive test result was confirmed last week by the Cobb & Douglas Public Health Department, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

This Friday’s game with Kennesaw Mountain High School had yet to be cancelled as of Monday, team officials told The Marietta Daily Journal. Two other Cobb County schools, Harrison High and South Cobb High, already have cancelled games this season because of COVID-19.

Pope High School is scheduled to reopen for in-person learning on Nov. 5.
