Coronavirus In California: What To Know Tuesday, June 30

CALIFORNIA — Gov. Gavin Newsom has repeatedly described the state's slow recovery from the coronavirus crisis as a "dimmer switch" toward a full reopening. This week, facing a concerning uptick in coronavirus cases across the state, Newsom said the state may need to start moving the dial back toward more restrictive measures.

"We’re using this dimmer switch to start to pull back this stay-at-home order," Newsom said at a Monday afternoon news conference.

The warning came one day after Newsom ordered bars and nightclubs to close immediately in seven counties seeing spikes in virus cases, while recommending that eight more counties with less-severe outbreaks do the same.

On Monday, Newsom laid out a concerning picture of the resurgence of COVID-19 in California, saying that the state has seen a 45 percent increase in confirmed cases over the past week. The percentage of tests coming back positive has also risen, from 4.4 percent on June 15 to 5.5 percent by Sunday.

The causes of the resurgence vary from county to county, according to state health secretary Dr. Mark Ghaly. Family gatherings outside the household appear to be responsible for the uptick in cases in Sacramento County, for example, while outbreaks in prisons and jails have caused cases to jump elsewhere, Ghaly said.

Newsom implored Californians to wear face coverings when out in public and abide by their counties' health orders to help slow the spread of the virus. If the current resurgence continues, he warned, stricter stay-at-home orders could come back on the books.

"If we do not see a mitigation of the spread, we will consider doing more," Newsom said Monday.
