Coronavirus Fears Make for 'Ghost Town' Holiday in Milan
The normal cosmopolitan bustle of Milan was utterly absent on February 24, after news of coronavirus outbreaks in northern Italy made the city a “ghost town,” according to Basque tourist Jon Gomez Garai.
Garai posted a video to Twitter on the 24th, showing a mostly empty street in Milan following the increase in number of COVID-19 related deaths in Italy.
Although the city of Milan is not under lockdown, the Lombardy region, which encompasses the dynamic fashion capital, had locked down at least 11 other towns surrounding Milan, as of Monday, February 24.
Italian authorities have closed schools, theaters, museums, and bars, and even suspended any formal events or meetings in certain areas, in an attempt to stop the spread of the virus, according to reports. Credit: Jon Gomez Garai via Storyful
