Coronavirus: Man fined for 240-mile round trip ‘to buy bread’
As trips to London go, police have suggested it was a little knead-less.
A motorist has been fined after telling officers he was driving on the motorway because he had been to the capital to buy bread.
The man, who was stopped while speeding at 110 mph, had travelled to London from his home in Nottingham. When asked why he was doing the journey during the coronavirus lockdown, he said a loaf was a pound cheaper there.
The distance between the two cities is 120 miles. It was 10.40pm.
Leicestershire Police pulled him over close to junction 22 of the M1 northbound on Sunday. The man, who has not been identified, had his two children in the car with him.
The force revealed officers gave the driver a notice for speeding and the courts would decide the level of the fine.
They also handed him a second notice under the Health Protection Regulations 2020, which comes with a £60 fine.
The legislation came into force last month to give police powers to punish anyone flouting lockdown restrictions.
